Kevin Mallinson

One of Julie’s nursing classmates, R. Kevin Mallinson (CFK, 1987), and his husband (Robert C. Hansen) established the Julie Eckard Scholarship to honor Julie’s love of the nursing profession and to serve as a reminder of her unwavering strength, tenacity, and sense of humor as she continued to help others despite and throughout her battle with HIV/AIDS. Following his years in the Key West Fire Department, he attended nursing school and received an Associates Degree in Nursing from CFK, his BSN from the University of Miami, and both his MSN and PhD in Nursing from the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing. Dr. Kevin Mallinson, a retired university professor and a public speaker and researcher who advocates for disenfranchised groups, particularly LGBTQ+ communities and persons with—or at risk for—HIV disease. He has been a member of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care (ANAC) for 30 years and has served on the organization’s national Board of Directors and several committees. Dr. Mallinson also served as the President of the HIV/AIDS Nursing Certification Board (HANCB).
